As a trustee Lezlie will continue to work for:
- High academic standards. We need to eliminate
grade inflation by separating subject mastery from effort.
Currently, a standards based report card is being piloted.
Recognize that career/technical education is every bit as
important and rigorous as the typical college prep program—one
size does not fit all in education.
- Utilizing foresight to meet the demands of growth.
Housing patterns have changed significantly in
the last few years. We need to proactively pursue available
land and collaborate with developers and community agencies.
The Cold Springs Middle School is a good example of creating
a true community school.
- Keeping abreast of job and career opportunities
for our students. We are educating them to compete
in the world of the future not to replicate our past. Business
leaders have identified content areas such as global awareness;
financial, economic, business, and entrepreneurial literacy,
and civic literacy as critical to success in the workplace.
Other skills such as communication, collaboration, and media
literacy skills are also important.
- Teaching life skills that will help our students
be productive citizens. They need to be taught
the essentials of leadership, ethics, accountability, personal
responsibility, self-direction, and adaptability.
- A safe and positive environment for students,
staff, and parents. It is not enough to arm school
police. We need to actively teach civility and respect and
model the “Golden Rule.” Every child needs at
least one adult on campus they can turn to for help and
advice. Children need to know bullying and any type of violence
will not be tolerated. We are implementing the Family Friendly
Schools program so everyone who comes to a school feels
welcome.
- Dialog with all education stake holders. We
need to use town hall meetings, small informal brown bag
lunches, SNCAT and our District Web site to keep people
informed and seek their input. We are working to make the
website more useful and friendly to everyone. Soon we will
be broadcasting our board meetings via the web. Edline and
Connect Ed are two new tools the district has acquired to
keep students and parents informed about school. Trustees
need to be more visible in the community.
- Create multiple educational options for students.
All students are not alike in abilities or interests. We
need to be as proactive for our Gifted and Talented as we
are for the Special Ed students. Every child is unique and
we must make a greater effort to monitor individual progress.
The new software program, Pulliam/IDMS will allow us to
monitor the growth of each student and teacher success.
A strong Career and Technical program and school is a must.
- Keep focusing on the basics. Reading
is the key to all other educational pursuits. We need to
continue our efforts at all levels. It is not acceptable
to graduate students who cannot read. We have adopted the
Read 180 program that helps our secondary students catch
up. Phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary are key.
- Continuously monitor our progress and make corrections
when and where needed.
