Lezlie Porter, Born December 20, 1947 - Died July 22, 2008
Originally from Whittier, California, Lezlie’s step-father
was an Air Force officer so the family lived on both coasts
and in Europe. She spent her college years attending schools
in Munich, Germany, Athens, Greece, and Copenhagen, Denmark.
She graduated from Whittier College with a B.S. in Psychology.
Prior to her marriage she worked for the Orange County Department
of Social Services in California handling eligibility and
foster care. After her marriage to Clyde Porter they moved
to Colorado and then Missouri where he finished Chiropractic
College. They moved to Nevada in 1976, originally locating
in Carson City and then settling in Sparks in 1977 and have
been here ever since.
Lezlie has worked as a parent volunteer
at the various schools her children attended – Alice
Maxwell, Lena Juniper, and Jerry Whitehead Elementaries and
Mendive Middle School. As a PTA volunteer
she served on the board for Lena Juniper and the multicultural
committee for Mendive . As a District volunteer
she served on the Year Round Schools Committee, Co-chaired
the Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee, Closed Campus
Advisory Committee, and the 1997 Strategic Planning Committee
on Accountability. As a State Board of Education Appointee
she served on the Math Standards and Fine Arts Standard writing
committees. She also served on the State Nutrition Policy
Committee.
As a trustee, Lezlie was first elected
in 1990 and then reelected in 1998, and 2002. She has served
on a variety of committees: Budget Advisory, Internal Audit,
Science Curriculum, Technology, Year Round Schools, Strategic
Planning, Home-School Partnership, Attendance Advisory, Safe
and Drug Free Schools, and the Student Attendance Advisory
Board. This experience has provided her with an understanding
of the District operations. She has attended numerous conferences
and seminars relating to education.
Lezlie has considerable leadership experience.
She is the Past State President of American Mothers, Inc.,
the Nevada State Chiropractic Auxiliary, Alliance for Children’s
Educational Excellence and is the current president of the
Washoe County Concert Association and the Washoe County Board
of Trustees.
She has served on the Boards of the Republican Women of
Reno and the National Conference of Community and Justice.
She currently is a board member of the Sparks Republican Women.
